Some helpful tips from bed & breakfast Mainz

The Roman Noblemen and the Emperor Barbarossa settled in Mainz and left their marks upon the current capitol of the State of Rheinland-Pfalz. Our town is not only an important media center, but also a university town. The millenium year 2000 was dedicated to Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the moveable-type printing press and our most famous Mainzer. In the Gutenberg museum one can try to print a page using this old method.

We will begin our city tour at the Mainz Church and the Dom (cathedral). Our St. Martins Dom is the best-known and largest building in Mainz, situated in the middle of the city center, where our Old Town and marketplace begin. Our other churches are also notable, for example, the St. Stephan's Church, built in the gothic style, has windows from Marc Chagall. On these windows are scenes from the Old Testament painted in tones of blue. After visiting another church, the Augustinerkirche, with its beautiful Baroque facade, we arrive in the Old Town.

Our Old Town is very charmingly built, with the Augustinerstrasse, wonderfully suited to stroll and stop in the little shops, cafes and Weinstuben (traditional wine bars), where it is easy to come into conversation with the natives. I especially recommend the Kirschgarten with its old, half-timbered buildings. The Weinhaus "Hof zum Spiegel" is a beloved subject for photographers.

Three times each week the marketplace becomes a colorful, almost oriental trading post for fruit, vegetables, flower and spice traders. A huge modern shopping paradise is found at the end of the Old Town, the "Fort-Malakoff-Park."

To cap off the day there is a rich assortment of choices. He who likes music or theater is best served at the Staatstheater. But also the Unterhaus, the Frankfurter Hof, and the KUZ offer interesting programs. You can spend you money in the charming Old Town, with its Weinstüben and restaurants - but those who want to multiply their money should visit the Spielbank (casino) Mainz.

There are ample opportunities to round off the day in a pleasant atmosphere. The theatre, Frankfurter Hof, Kuz and Unterhaus, a casino and lots of wine taverns offer plenty of entertainment. In addition to the Carnival (Fastnacht) in February and the Johannis Festival in June, there are many other events in the city that loves celebrations.

When it comes to lodging, I can arrange comfortable and low-priced guest rooms in Mainz.

I am looking forward to your visit!
