The world’s most beautiful mine, the Zollverein World Heritage Site XII, is definitely a must-see. Over 12,000 tonnes of coal used to be transported here each day, from a depth of up to 640 metres. Not only adults find our mines amazing. They also bring a smile to children’s faces.

The Grugapark is Germany’s largest and one of its most beautiful leisure parks. It is situated in the centre of Essen and offers young and old something to see all the year round – whether it’s the botanical gardens, the wildlife park, in the meadows or in the open-air museum.

Close to the suburban rail network, you will find Lake Baldeney, which provides a 15 km-long bank for skateboarding, jogging, cycling or walking. The range of water sports on offer is enormous, and this is also where Germany’s largest inland lake regatta takes place, Essen’s sailing week.

Miles of recently created cycle paths invite you to get to know interesting sites of the various parts of the city of Essen, and if you like, the entire Ruhr region as well. As an alternative to cycling, you can also discover ‘Essen’s Kultur Line 107’, the cultural tramline or have a city tour in a modern double decker open-up bus. The Aalto Theatre, Germany’s finest opera house, has also recently opened, as has the Folkwang Museum. The Grillo Theatre is among the most famous playhouses in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the Ruhrland Museum, you will learn how people lived in the Ruhr area around 1900. In the Hügel Villa, former residence of the Krupp family, you will be given some background about the factory and the life of this family of industrialists.

We and our hosts will then ensure you have a good night’s sleep after your many discoveries, for example in a beautiful private room, self-catering flat or a cosy holiday residence from which you can reach the Zollverein mine in about 15 minutes by bike. We also welcome business travellers to Essen. Our exhibition rooms with very good links to Essen’s exhibition centre are very popular, as are our rooms for craftspeople and technicians and residences that we can offer at reasonable rates.

We look forward to your visit.
