Welcome to Mainz! Our Fastnacht (mardi gras) is known to all...but Mainz doesn't only laugh and sing, as the saying goes, but has many more faces. And you shouldn't forget elegant Wiesbaden, just a short distance away from Mainz. I invite you to learn more about these cities!

We will begin in Mainz. The Roman Noblemen and the Emperor Barbarossa settled in Mainz and left their marks upon the current capitol of the State of Rheinland-Pfalz. Our town is not only an important media center, but also a university town. The millenium year 2000 was dedicated to Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the moveable-type printing press and our most famous Mainzer. In the Gutenberg museum one can try to print a page using this old method.
We will begin our city tour at the Mainz Church and the Dom (cathedral). Our St. Martins Dom is the best-known and largest building in Mainz, situated in the middle of the city center, where our Old Town and marketplace begin. Our other churches are also notable, for example, the St. Stephan's Church, built in the gothic style, has windows from Marc Chagall. On these windows are scenes from the Old Testament painted in tones of blue. After visiting another church, the Augustinerkirche, with its beautiful Baroque facade, we arrive in the Old Town.
Our Old Town is very charmingly built, with the Augustinerstrasse, wonderfully suited to stroll and stop in the little shops, cafes and Weinstuben (traditional wine bars), where it is easy to come into conversation with the natives. I especially recommend the Kirschgarten with its old, half-timbered buildings. The Weinhaus "Hof zum Spiegel" is a beloved subject for photographers.
Three times each week the marketplace becomes a colorful, almost oriental trading post for fruit, vegetables, flower and spice traders. A huge modern shopping paradise is found at the end of the Old Town, the "Fort-Malakoff-Park."
To cap off the day there is a rich assortment of choices. He who likes music or theater is best served at the Staatstheater. But also the Unterhaus, the Frankfurter Hof, and the KUZ offer interesting programs. You can spend you money in the charming Old Town, with its Weinstüben and restaurants - but those who want to multiply their money should visit the Spielbank (casino) Mainz.
If I had to recommend a best time to visit: January is the high point of the Fastnacht, our most well-known celebration, with the New Years Parade through the city center, mardi gras balls and gatherings, the Rosenmontagszug (Mardi Gras parade), which attracts over 500,000 visitors every year. Our second largest festival, the Johannisnacht, takes place in June. In all of Mainz there are stands, open-air live concerts, and a big event with all sorts of boats and ships on the Rhine. This festival concludes with a huge firework display.
Wiesbaden borders directly on Mainz. This elegant spa, and the capitol city of the State of Hessen, with circa 270,000 inhabitants, lies nestled between the Taunus and the Rhine river, and distinguishes itself with its mild, almost mediterranean climate. In good weather a ride with the Nerobergbahn presents a picture-book panorama, although this is not recommended for those afraid of heights. The hydraulically driven gondola goes for 440 meters and ascends at an angle of 26% to 80 meters high.
If you prefer to stay on the ground, I'd like to recommend a visit to the Fasanerie (pheasant park), the big animal and botanical park where you can take long walks. Or visit the one-time residence of the Count of Nassau, the Biebricher Schloss (castle), an imposing Baroque building direct on the Rhine. The Greek chapel with its five gold covered onion domes is worth a visit. Russian-Byzantine services are still held here.
