The Kitzingen district, widely known as the "wine district" has almost half of the wine stocks in Franconia as well as a rich cultural landscape. This includes many historical towns and villages with old town walls, tithed farms, half-timbered buildings and many "smaller" art monuments. The famous wine and vintage festivals which attract thousands of visitors from near and far each year are brimming with atmosphere.

The Kitzingen region covering around 680 square kilometres stretches from the Main triangle in the east to the edge of the Steigerwald in the west. Viticulture is the major landmark of the region. The many different geological conditions allow a large number of wine varieties to be produced which are enhanced further by the wide range of vines which are grown. Many interesting names can be found on the typical Franconian bocksbeutel bottles such as "Iphöfer Julius-Echter-Berg, Volkacher Kirchberg and Dettelbacher Honigberg" to name just a few.

With a total population of approx. 21,000 the old wine trading town of Kitzingen is the centre of the district with its landmark Falterturm also known as the ‘broken’ or ‘leaning’ tower.

Kitzingen is a member of the tourist association “Die Gastlichen Fünf im Fränkischen Weinland“, the five best known wine towns in the Franconian region. Besides Kitzingen these are Volkach, Dettelbach, Iphofen and Gerolzhofen. In addition to their famous wines and many cultural and historical places of interest these towns are known for their typical Franconian hospitality.

The Kitzingen region offers visitors many leisure activities such as guided vineyard tours, wine sampling in elegant surroundings and original wine cellar tours, wine seminars, guided city tours, a well developed network of bicycle and walking routes, guided bicycle tours, boat trips on the Main, carriage rides and numerous museums.

The wine district is especially popular in early summer when the famous Franconian asparagus is on the menu, in summer when the wine festivals are held and in autumn when the grapes are being harvested. The young wine, also known as Bremser , and the Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart) which is typically eaten along with the wine are great favourites which remain in the visitors’ memory long after they have returned home.
