The city of Hannover has grown from a one-time rural market on the Leine river, and to this day has maintained its importance as a marketplace.   Every year international industries meet at the Hannover Fair and at the Cebit Techno Fair. Beyond the business world there is another Hannover! The newly-renovated city center, with its shop windows, cafes, art objects, and bubbling fountains is a paradise in which to stroll and relax. The Georgstraße and the Karmarschstraße are Hannovers exclusive shopping arcades. You'd have to walk far for butter, but you can find a gold watch for EUR 25.000 just around the corner. The one-time charm of the old town is best seen in the Kramerstraße, which has been restored into a sort of half-timbered museum. King Ernst August sits on his high horse (as a memorial) that Hannover erected in 1861 in front of the train station. This memorial has been a meeting place for generations. One meets "under the tail" at the back side of the statue. While waiting, tourists may wonder about the thick red line they see painted on the sidewalk. This unusual line winds around the city center, broken by mysterious circles and numbers, and even disappears under the earth in places. Whoever follows this line will discover 4668 meters of trail, laid down by city officials, which leads one to the important sights and historical places in the city center. The Maschsee, a lake in the middle of the town at the beautiful Rathaus, is a good place to take a break. If you have enough time, a trip into the countryside is even more restful, with attractions such as the Welfenresidenz in Wolfenbüttel, or Polle, a painterly village with romantic little streets in the valley of the Weserberge.
