...deep in the West, where the sun turns to dust, it's better, much better, than one thinks...The lyrics from native son Herbert Grönemeyer express that special "Ruhrpott" charm. Life admidst coal, steel, pigeon breeders, "Bude" (refreshment stands) and beergardens - we'd like to show you...

Tips
The most attractive coal mining site in the world, the "Zeche Zollverein XII" is not to be missed. Over 12,000 tons of coal are mined every day, at a depth of 640 meters. It takes only 83 seconds to transport a 10 ton load of coal to the surface.

Our coal mine doesn't amaze only adults. The children's eyes will glow at our top program: the "Apprentice Franz" tells the little ones all that one must know to become a miner. The children can try on original coal miner's outfits, and go down a replica of the "Schicht", the narrow, dark world underground. We will be pleased to inform you about the many other children's and adult programs.

In the Ruhrlandmuseum you will experience how people lived in the Ruhr around the year 1900. In the Villa Hügel, former residence of the Krupp industrial family, you will find background information on the work and life of the Krupps, as well as important art exhibitions.

But we Esseners don't only work. We have a special passion for wagering, whether on horses or pigeons (the racehorse of the common man). There are three million of them in the Ruhr area. Do you bet that betting fever will infect you, too?

Our "Buden" are always open and close-by. They shape the landscape of our city and our lives...a quick stop up by the "Bude", that means a coffee or a beer as you stand and listen to the latest gossip.

The "Pott" atmosphere in its purest form is found under the roofs of Esseners. For example, in a typical old coal mining settlement, either with family and conversation in the kitchen, or all by yourself.
