"Grüß Sie Gott" is the obligatory greeting in Franken! In Erlangen and the Franconian Switzerland there is so much to see and experience - join me on a tour of my stomping grounds...   Erlangen - centre of bicycle romanticism and microelectronics. The comparatively old city had its first entry in the records in 1002. Yet, it wasn’t until the Huguenots settled here in the 17th century that it attained further incentives. In 1743 the Friedrich-Alexander Universität was founded, today being well known outside of Germany, too. After the war years Erlangen gained new economic power through Siemens. The company, having their second largest location world-wide here, contributes to the growth of the town and its surrounding municipalities. Culture is spelled in capital letters here. Be it the Markgrafentheater or the E-Werk, every age group is catered for. In multicultural Erlangen one enjoys the influences of all countries. Not far from Erlangen Franconian Switzerland is located. And as we are well-known for our peace and leisurely pace: Caution! Anyone meandering their way through our winding roads should bring along time. Let’s start in Forchheim, the town sporting the world’s biggest Advent calendar at christmas time. The old part of town simply is worth seeing with its renovated imperial palace and the river „Bächla“ running right in the middle of the pedestrian precinct. On we go on the federal road 470 into Franconia - the „Fränkische“ -, complete with the gruesomely beautiful dripstone caves, our river Wiesent and many ruins along the road. We are particularly proud of our legendary house-mountain „Walberla“. Pretzfeld is at its foot. The place is not only famous as the largest sweet cherry centre of the European Union! Also TV advertisment has made use of the beautiful ambience: this is where the washing-powder manufactorer „Der Weiße Riese“ shot the famous commercial with the „longest clothes-line on earth“! And I can promise you genuine Franconian palate sensations ranging from rustic to downright exquisite. How about a mouth-watering taste? Crisp „Schäuferla“ with dumpling, „Blaue Zipfel“ (fried sausages with sour sauce), „Krenfleisch“ (beef with horseradish sauce). What is there more pleasant than a substantial Brotzeit, a „bread time“ under shady chestnut trees with delicious sausage specialities, freshbaked bread and a cool mug of beer? Do visit us for the Annafest, the celebration of Anna, taking place annually in the last week of July. On top of the „Kellern“ (cellars) you sit on ethnic wooden benches in the forest and enjoy the Annafest beer that has been stored in the vaults under the „Kellern“. Anyway, tradition is strongly emphasized in Franconia. Each village has got its own Kärwa (consecration of the church), where the Kerwas’baam is mounted and the „Betz is driven out“. That is to say: the mutton is released by means of dancing. Do you already know the Almadlerhütte with the climbing garden? Here both young and old can test their clambering skills and cool their feet in the adjacent forest-spring. A hearty Brotzeit is served at the nearby Senftenbergkeller amidst the forest. And if you would like to get rid of some of those calories, you can do so on marvellous paths in the woods that offer the most beautiful panoramatic views down onto the valley. Or you may cycle along peaceful, winding streets passing by idyllic half-timbered houses. Or try freeclimbing, or as for the more contemplative ones why not learn to fly fish or to paint... there is just so much to experience here!
