| To this
inspiring city that has become world famous for the renowned Bayreuth
Festival.
If you
are curious about history and culture, you should definitely pay a visit to
this city for a few enjoyable days. Together with Bamberg and Nuremberg it
frames the Franconian
Switzerland.
Bayreuth
evolved from an Andechs-Meranien settlement in the middle of the 12th
century. In the 18th century it became a residential city when the Old
Castle was built and other representative buildings were commissioned by the
Margrave Frederic and his wife Wilhelmine, a daughter of the Soldier-King
Frederick William I of Prussia.

As a
Prussian princess, she was initially espoused to the heir apparent of
England but eventually
married the heir to the Bayreuth throne for politics' sake. The couple's
only child was Elisabeth Sophie of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, who was described
by Giacomo Casanova as the most beautiful girl in Germany.
One of
Wilhelmine's friends and admirers was Voltaire, who once wrote to the
Markgravine: "In Bayreuth I have seen a court where all the pleasures of
sociality and all the enjoyments of the spirit are gathered."
One of
the most imaginative Franconians moved to Bayreuth at the beginning of the
19th century - the poet Jean Paul. However, sentences like: "It is sad if
you keep nothing but your head," didn't exactly make him popular with
everybody.
Based on
the designs of Gottfried Semper and Richard Wagner, the Festival Theatre was
put up on the Green Hill at the end of the 19th century. The Bayreuth
Festival, also called "Richard Wagner Festival", is a theatre and music
festival taking place annually from late July to the end of August. Franz
Liszt, Peter Tschaikowski and Friedrich Nietzsche were some of the famous
guests of the 1876 Ring des Nibelungen premiere.

After you
have enjoyed the inspiring and lively atmosphere of the past in this
beautiful city for a day, we recommend a break from the culture. The Jura,
the Franconian Switzerland and the Fichtelgebirge offer a multitude of sport
facilities. From early spring until autumn you can go on superb climbing or
hiking tours on more than 5000 km of trails amidst meadow, forest and rock
landscapes, which are still intact.
Idyllic
Franconian villages will line your road, providing snug inns for you to
refresh yourself and recreate, indoors or in the beer garden.
For golf
friends there is the Golf Club Oberfranken e. V., situated within a wild,
romantic low mountain rage landscape near Thurnau, its 18 holes golf course
living up to international standards.
In winter
the Schneeberg and the Ochsenkopf mountains with their two cable cars and 19
lifts offer winter fun to beginners and adepts. Cross-country skiing fans
will find 300 km of loipes groomed for them.
Being all
exhausted and relaxed at night, you can then come to rest in a lovingly
equipped bed & breakfast guestroom or apartment. We have a suitable offer
for you, whether you are travelling alone, together with your friends or
your family.
We are
looking forward to your visit!
