There is pure romance in this "little Venice", and not only for young lovers. This fairytale place is the Middle Ages up close and personal, and an unforgetable experience, even with kids & co. Let me give you a few tips...   Kaiser Heinrich II loved this town and made a gift of the "Bistum Bamberg" to his wife, Kunigunde. Bamberg is over 1000 years old, and was recognized as a World Cultural Treasure in 1993. Here every tourist is captured by the magic of the past. "Little Venice" is not only a nickname for Bamberg, but reflects its history as the oldest settlement of fishermen's dwellings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Even today, the local fishermen celebrate the traditional "Fischerstechen" (or catch) during the yearly Sandkerwa (Sandkirchweih, or blessing of the Sand church) on the fourth weekend in August.
My recommendations for a day in Bamberg are as follows: In the morning visit the legendary "Bamberg Reiter", as well as the architecture of T. Riemenschneider and J.L. Dientzenhofer. Bamberg is not only a town for lovers, but also for children. Your little darlings will have a wonderful time with the treats we can offer them. In summer there are many child-pleasing festivals in the town center and the Old Town, such as the Magic Weekend, in which they can take part. Or the "Chapeau Claque", a children's theater which offers programs where the kids can take part in the productions, as well as the hair-raising "Ghost Night". And in the E.T.A. Hoffmann Theater, where the kids can take a look behind the scenes. We can inform you of the dates for these events. The day's program is planned, now we need to organize the lodgings. Afterwards, stroll through the Old Town with its enchanting small alleys and browse through the various antique shops. In the afternoon, I recommend a gondola ride through our romantic canals. And in the evening? What can be more pleasurable than, on a warm summer evening to sup in good company "auf den Keller", that is, in one of our innumerable beer gardens? Surrounded by old and majestic chestnut and Lime trees, the only problem one might encounter is choosing between the more than 40 sorts of beer on offer.
