Many visitor experience Frankfurt only in passing - although those who stay discover, besides the skyline and banks, a different, lively Frankfurt with picturesque countryside. And Darmstadt, known for its art deco, is a charming destination. Accompany me on a little tour...

My favorite part of town is the Stöffche quarter, known for more than 250 pubs and the "Appelwoi" (apple wine) served there, as well as "Handkäs mit Musik" (hand cheese with music, a hearty cheese snack). Those who come in the early evening will meet the locals and hear anecdotes about such original Frankfurter figures as "Quetschelilli" and "Bretzel (Pretzel) Karl". On weekends and holidays the Ebbelwoi Express (an old street car) travels hourly between 1:32 p.m. and 5:32 p.m. between Sachsenhausen and Bornheim center and back. Included in the fare is a packet of apple wine or juice and pretzels.

The Museumsufer (museum riverbank), is comparable to Hamburg's Alster, decorated with parks and gardens, which invite one to stroll, debate, or nap. Eleven of the 20 museums can be found on the right and left banks of the Main river. Among others, the Icon Museum, Museum for Kunsthandwerk (artisan handwork), Völkerkunde (Ethnology), the German Filmmuseum, the German Architektmuseum, the Museum for Post & Telekommunikation, and the Städelche Kunstinstitut (art institute).

The Grüneberg park and the palm garden are beautiful, and a feast for the eyes in every season with the many rare plants. One can get free horticultural advice from the experts. And not to forget, also here is the zoo of the famous German zoologist Professor Grzimek!

The most important square in Frankfurt is the Römerberg. The city was founded here over 1200 years ago, and German Kings and Kaisers have been crowned in this square since the mid-16th century. It's only a few minutes from here to the Paulskirche and the Goethe House, as well as the Kleinmarkthalle (little market hall) and the Kornmarkt (grain market) where one finds the wonderful Cafe Wacker.

One should not miss a stroll through the "Zeil", Germany's most exclusive shopping district, and through the "Fressgass", Frankfurts most feudal promenade with restaurants, delicatessen, elegant bistros and the traditional cafe Schwille.

In the evenings, there are almost too many choices, with concerts in the Festhalle, in the Waldstadion, or in the Alten Oper (old opera), where everything is produced but opera. Or you can go to the famous Variete "Tiger Palast," which also has an excellent menu and wine list.

The Frankfurt countryside is very enticing. You are quickly in the nearby Taunus region, with the Feldberg, in Rüsselsheim, or in romantic Spessart.

The organization "Liebenswertes Frankfurt" (Lovely, lively Frankfurt) gives tours in different languages every two hours (by prior agreement) through the city center and shows Frankfurt from its personal perspective. Every 3rd Saturday in the month there is a tour (no registration required), at 2 p.m. beginning in the Cafe Hauptwache.

Should you, nonetheless, only stop in passing, in the vicinity of the airport I can recommend, as either the beginning or end of your German tour, the restaurant "Alte Oberförsterei" in Klesterbach, with its authentic ambience and excellent dishes.
